How to boost Butyric acid (Butyrate) in the colon.

It appears that the health of the gastrointestinal tract, the colon and overall body is linked to the type of food consumed and the bacterial species residing in the colon that are able to convert certain components of the diet into beneficial SCFA, in particular, Butyric acid and other metabolites that may have a direct influence on the functioning of the body.
This indicates that general long term health status may be achieved by including foods that are exclusively available for fermentation in the colon by friendly bacteria leading to enhanced local production of short chain fatty acids, particularly Butyrate. If these bacteria are not present in the intestines and colon due to overuse of antibiotics or other infections, an effort needs to be made to re-introduce these into the diet. This can be done by including fermented foods or Probiotics in the diet.
Enhanced local production of Butyrate by nutritional approaches may be beneficial in gastrointestinal disorders such as Irritable bowel syndrome, Travellers diarrhoea, Antibiotic associated diarrhoea, Mucosal damage by various toxins, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, prevention of colorectal cancer, Inflammatory bowel disease and acute gastroenteritis.

Butyric acid production in the colon by fermentation may be enhanced by providing suitable conditions within the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the colon. This can be achieved by
1.Introducing non pathogenic Bacteria into the colon via Probiotics. Probiotics are live and viable microorganisms, which, if taken in adequate amounts, confer a beneficial effect to the host. 
2.An acidic colonic environment appears to boost the bacterial synthesis of Butyrate.
Increasing concentrations of acidic fermentation products in the colon by encouraging production of Lactic acid and other short chain fatty acids causes the luminal pH in the proximal colon to be lower. This pH seems to boost the formation of butyrate, as mildly acidic pH values allow butyrate-producing bacteria to compete against Gram-negative carbohydrate-utilizing bacteria. 
3.Provide the substrate required for conversion into Butyric acid by including plant foods in the diet that cannot be digested by human enzymes.
Dietary fibre, particularly soluble fibre and resistant starch are the main ingredients required for bacterial fermentation resulting in the production of short chain fatty acids.
Plant polysaccharides such as
Inulin, Fructooligosaccharides and resistant starch that escape digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and arrive in the colon intact make a suitable substrate for the bacteria.
Edible Raw plant foods may contain more resistant starch than cooked versions of the same. Cooking tends to convert the starch to a form that the human digestive enzymes are able to convert into simple sugars.

Changes to the microflora of the bowel are a slow process and the benefits obtained may take a long time. Prevention of disease and long term health of the body should be the general aim. 

How to heal and prevent Bowel disorders

Diet is not about what you should NOT eat, it’s about what you should include in the diet that matters.
As long as your diet includes the correct balance of plant foods containing soluble fibre, insoluble fibre and resistant starch your colon will produce the perfectly formed stool.
