How do we change the way we go?
How do you convince the populations of Western countries to convert to the squat posture for defecation?
Is there an easy way to go back to old ways?


We cannot practically expect people to install squat toilets in their homes due to the associated costs but more importantly, the physical inability of the majority to adopt the squat posture even for a few minutes.
Most people in the west have lost the ability to squat due to not using the muscles that nature provided for this function. Not using the muscles involved in squatting from childhood causes these muscles to atrophy.

The solution is to leave the raised toilet alone and help people to create a posture while sitting on the raised toilet seat to MIMIC what happens to your rectum, colon and anal passage when squatting.

The best modified approach to the squat posture while sitting on the modern raised water closet with minimal disruption in the bathroom is to mimic the squat posture with the aid of a specially designed squat stool.
The aim would be to design a shaped high platform (nearly as high as the toilet seat) to place one’s feet on while sitting on the modern toilet seat.
There would ideally be one platform for each foot so that the angle at which your legs are placed can be adjusted as required and to achieve the tip toe posture.
The platform(s) would reside on each side of the toilet seat or in front of the seat so that each foot can be placed on the platform to raise the feet, legs and thighs in a way that helps mimic the squat posture (the thighs pressing against the sides of the lower abdomen to “compress” the colon located at these positions).
The shape and size of the platform can be standardised as to height, length, width and depth to reflect the shape & size of the human foot.

The platform can be shaped like a shoe/slipper and have a hollow within it to insert one’s feet/shoe/slipper into.
This hollow space should be at a slant of approx 45 degrees so that when one places his/her feet into or onto the hollow in/on the platform one’s body is instinctively brought forward to assume a forward leaning posture.
The combined effect of the raised posture with the forward leaning posture aligns the Colon, Rectum and Anus in such a manner that there are no “kinks” or bends that would prevent emptying or cause obstruction.
This posture allows complete evacuation with minimal pushing and no straining, preventing all the damage that can result from doing so.

Western Society is so used to the sitting posture for achieving a bowel motion that it is almost unthinkable of going back to the natural Squatting posture that is the norm in most of South East Asia, China, India and Japan.
All homes in the West have a Ceramic or Porcelain “Throne” type toilet and require one to sit on it to carry out our bodily functions.
This posture could not be more wrong or less appropriate and has caused innumerable problems to the young and old since it’s “invention” by some Plumbers and Cabinet makers (not Health Professionals) of the Victorian era.
The sitting position makes elimination difficult and incomplete, and forces one to strain.
Human beings spend a lot of time sitting on chairs while carrying out normal duties or relaxing. If we were meant to empty our bowels in this posture, we would be ready to go all the time. The muscles that control the function of the sphincters (locks) that control continence just cannot relax to open and create a passage in this posture, even though we have certain voluntary control over their action.
The squat posture allows the muscles that control the sphincters to relax and create an open passage for easy and complete evacuation. When there are no “kinks” in the colon, rectum, and anal path, evacuation occurs without any extra straining or exertion.

Since the “modern” seat toilet is the norm in most homes and is not going to be replaced by a squat toilet anytime soon, it is very difficult to achieve a squat posture unless one climbs on to the seat to do this. Not a very practical proposition, not to mention dangerous for the elderly.

Another option is to try and simulate the squatting posture as much as possible by using a device that will help to raise the feet, legs and thighs to the right angles and assume a forward leaning posture while sitting on the modern throne type toilet seat to try and achieve complete evacuation of the bowels by aligning the Colon, rectum and Anus so that there are no “kinks” that would prevent emptying and cause obstruction. (In the sitting and standing position there is normally a kink or bend to prevent leakage of faeces). When squatting, the bowel aligns itself naturally and the kink is straightened due to the pelvic tilt, thus allowing the rectum to open completely and effortlessly; no strain occurs. You will notice a greater sense of ease and will also pass much more.

How to heal and prevent Bowel disorders

Diet is not about what you should NOT eat, it’s about what you should include in the diet that matters.
As long as your diet includes the correct balance of plant foods containing soluble fibre, insoluble fibre and resistant starch your colon will produce the perfectly formed stool. The important next step is to evacuate this stool without straining so that the body does not suffer from the pressures created each time the bowel is emptied.

In order to heal and prevent bowel disorders you need to make lifestyle changes that last the rest of your life time.

1. Include more fluids and plant food containing soluble fibre, insoluble fibre and resistant starch in the diet so that the perfectly formed stool will be made in the colon and beneficial bacteria will flourish and eliminate disease causing bacteria and fungi.

2. Evacuate the perfectly formed stool by adopting the squat posture to eliminate the need to strain during bowel movements.

It is not possible or safe to squat on the modern raised toilet seat installed in all western homes and it is impossible to squat for any length of time if you have not done this from childhood onwards. This makes the use of any raised platforms impossible to adapt to.
