Hiatus Hernia

The reason for straining during a bowel movement is to eliminate a stool that will not pass easily.

The process of straining raises the pressures within the abdominal cavity above those that are in the chest.

The chest and the abdomen are separated by the muscle that makes up the diaphragm, essential for breathing.

The Oesophagus and the large blood vessels Aorta and Vena Cava originating from the heart pass through the diaphragm.

The oesophagus is moveable. Pressures caused by Straining can cause weakening of the muscle at the point where the oesophagus passes.
This strain pushes the stomach into the natural opening for the oesophagus causing the muscular opening to dilate. This causes the condition called a Hiatus Hernia. The stomach may often find its way into the chest cavity.  The movement of the stomach out of its normal position causes a weakening of the muscle that controls entry of food from the oesophagus into the stomach.
This muscle normally contracts in order to keep acid from the stomach contents entering the oesophagus. Weakening of this muscle causes acid to reflux into the oesophagus and often end up into the mouth and lungs causing oesophagitis.

Diet is not about what you should NOT eat, it’s about what you should include in the diet that matters.
As long as your diet includes the correct balance of plant foods containing soluble fibre, insoluble fibre and resistant starch your colon will produce the perfectly formed stool.
